This rare antique piece originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria, specifically from the town of Seminara — a place world-renowned for its centuries-old ceramic traditions. Hand-thrown and dating back to the mid-1800s, the jug features raised floral and palm tree motifs on both sides. Its elegant form and intricate detailing are a true testament to the mastery of the artist-potter.
With its unique multi-colour glaze, this one-of-a-kind vessel would have taken pride of place in a family home. The vibrant palette of pistachio green, mustard yellow, ochre brown, sea blue, and creamy white is quintessential to Seminara ceramics. Years of daily use have bestowed upon the clay a wonderful surface texture — that magical patina that only the passage of time can create.
